Prevention Programs
Authentic Answers Abstinence Alliance (4A)
In July, 2004, Celebrate Kids, Inc. was awarded a three-year federal SPRANS grant which comes under the US Department of Children and Families. The umbrella is Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE). The grant expired in June of 2007. We are praying for God's direction and funding so we can continue our important prevention work.
This funding allowed us to offer programs about abstinence-only education for military teens and their peers, their parents, and professionals who work with adolescents. We offered most of our training in and around Fort Hood, the largest military base in the U.S., which is located in Killeen, Texas.
In Bell County, where Fort Hood is located, Chlamydia and gonorrhea cases have nearly doubled in the past five years and the unmarried teen pregnancy rate climbed nearly 80%. Numerous factors contribute to the epidemic including high rates of divorce, family violence, and parent absence. Moreover, military children may face higher rates of depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, and academic failure. These factors combine to place the military teen at extreme risk.
Our program, which we titled "Authentic Answers" (AA) focuses on the root causes of teen pregnancy and teens' core needs of security, identity, belonging, purpose and competence. When youth, families, and communities are empowered to meet these needs in healthy ways, they will no longer need the unhealthy behaviors. They will be free to embrace healthy futures with the spirit and resilience to rise above their circumstances - military stress, divorce, relocation, and any other hurdle.
